Worked example: a 400 W module
A 400 W panel has a 1.9 m² face area and the reference irradiance is 1,000 W/m².
- 1.9 m² × 1,000 W/m² = 1,900 W incident power.
- 400 W ÷ 1,900 W = 0.2105.
- 0.2105 × 100 = 21.1% rated module efficiency.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using roof area instead of the panel face area.
- Treating module efficiency as the same thing as annual system yield.
- Leaving the irradiance condition implicit when comparing panels.
- Comparing panels with different rated conditions without checking their datasheets.
Questions people ask
What does this solar panel efficiency calculator measure?
It compares rated DC power with the sunlight power incident on the entered module area. That is a module-level estimate, not a prediction of the energy your full array will produce.
Why does the calculator start at 1,000 W/m²?
It is a visible STC-style reference condition used for nameplate comparisons. You can replace it when you are analyzing another irradiance condition.
Should I use the roof area?
No. Use the active module face area or the panel dimensions. Roof setbacks, walkways, shade, and mounting structure belong in a separate roof-layout check.
Is higher module efficiency always better for my system?
Higher efficiency can produce more rated watts in the same footprint, but price, temperature behavior, shade, orientation, degradation, and the rest of the system still affect practical output.
